Abstract |
Objective Controversy exists over surgical methods used to treat low-grade spondylolisthesis. This study compares low- grade degenerative spondylolisthesis clinical and radiological results between posterolateral fusion(PLF) and posterior lumbar interbody fusion(PLIF) both using transpedicular screw fixation.
Methods Clinical data from sixty adult patients who had undergone operation for degenerative spondylolisthesis during 3 years were reviewed retrospectively. Two groups of thirty patients having either PLF(Group I) or PLIF(Group II), both using transpedicular screw fixation, were reviewed. Groups I and II had patient mean ages of 57.2 years and 53.5 years, respectively. Groups I and II had male to female ratios of 13:17 and 10:20, respectively, while the average follow-up period was 31 months and 29 months, respectively.
Results The Group I fusion rate 1 year after surgery was 90%, while Group II was 93.3%. Group I anterior displacement averaged 17.9%(range, 11節32%). Group II averaged 17.2%(range, 9節31%) anterior displacement. Groups I and II average anterior displacements after surgery was 10.4%(range, 7節13%) and 2.2%(range, 0節8%) (p<0.01), respectively.
Conclusion There were no statistically significant differences in clinical and radiological results between PLF with transpedicular screw fixation versus PLIF with transpedicular screw fixation in degenerative spondylolisthesis, except the corre- ction degree of anterior slippage.
